This is my third home projector in seven years. I purchased this one because my last projector was a 720p and it could not project a blu-ray image because of the dvi connection and HDCP issues. I paid around $600 for my Hitachi PJ-100TX about three years ago. I purchased this factory refurbished PJ for $499 from an online company. I had two Epson Movie Mates (WVGA projectors)that I purchased for my daughter. They each threw a great picture.

This is designed to be a multi-media device but performs well as a home theater projector. In setting this up I was mostly concerned about offset. My 98″ diagonal screen starts three inches from the ceiling and the center of the lens of the mounted projector is about five inches from the ceiling with about a three inch downward offset. So with the lens where it is, the screen should be five inches lower than it is for the lens to throw a perfect rectangle with a perpendicular angle. On the old machine I had lens shift which is routinely found in the MovieMate models and more expensive Epson projectors but this machiine does not have it. Since, I didn’t want to lower my built in screen, I needed to have keystoning correction. Keystone correction is automatic and it fits the screen perfectly with some tweeking of the mount. Keystone correction according to the gurus causes distortion particularly with text. While I am a somewhat sophisticated video hardware buff, I do not perceive any issues with distortion.

The big difference between the two HD projectors was that of brightness. My old projector seemed dark at times even in our darkened basement with 1200 lumens. This throws a very bright 2000 lumens, estheticly pleasing image. Watching Avatar with its aerial scenes is a real treat. I cannot imagine even a DLP or 1080 projector doing much better, certainly not for the price. This is a little secret that Epson does not shout about because it wants to sell its more expensive projectors. The 720p is very high resolution and has a very clear picture. There is no obvious screendoor effect.

If you are not real fussy, that is needing a 1080p, or brighter projector, this will work well for you. It appears that there was only one review on this site of this projector that was below a 4. If anyone reads that review and has experienced a good working EX70, I would guess that they would tell you that the machine was obviously defective and only needed to be replaced.

I am very happy with my decision to get the ex70. I was looking for a ‘cheap man’s’ 1080p that could handle my PS3 for games and movies. My other requirements were inexpensive lamp replacement cost, long lamp life, quite operation, and short throw distance. The Epson preforms all my requirements very nicely. With a 2 year warranty this projector will give a anyone a happy experience at a outstanding price.

We bought this projector for our church and it works great in our setting. We’ve only had it for about 3 weeks and it’s been working great. It is a very bright projector, which is what we wanted. In the sport mode you will get the brightest screen.

We use it Commercially, Games, Home Theater

Commercially we use this product to the job of producing a big picture from 2 sources computer and Sony HDR-FX1. Our audience is anywhere from 100 to 300 people.

Games we use PS3 to play soccer, and trust me you feel as if you are in the actual game.

Home Theater, i’m never going to the theater again.

One advantage though is the true HDMI screen quality but then sound will have to be used from the projector which is’nt that bad but not that good either. So it works out for the games, for movies I would still suggest RCA connector and it’s pretty good. However sometimes you do feel in bright areas that it lacks the lumens but for [...] bucks you can’t go wrong.
